On Tuesday 15 August, 2017, at Readings Carlton, I’m delighted to be discussing global cocktail culture with my debonair friend Chad Parkhill, to launch his book Around the World in 80 Cocktails. Part recipe collection, part cultural and culinary history, this beautiful volume is gorgeously illustrated by Alice Oehr. Apart from its delicious contents, this little hardback is an unusually gorgeous book to have and hold.
My own tastes in booze are way less refined than Chad’s; he has a column on the subject at The Guardian. However, I’m intrigued by the ways in which commerce, sexuality, class, gender and more are encapsulated in drinking ingredients and habits, and the ways that drinks make their way into popular culture and come to represent an era or an attitude.
The launch is free, but you need to let them know if you’ll be coming because Chad will be preparing a special batch of one of the cocktails featured in the book. Cheers!
